Bae Arlyne Salazar

Carved in the annals of indigenous history, culture and the arts in Davao is the name Bae Arlyne Desabilla Salazar.

A cultural master and esteemed educator of indigenous arts, Bae Arlyne is, of her own and through her art, a living tradition. She is regarded as the Mother of the Bagobo-Tagabawa Indigenous Cultural Community in Lubogan, Toril, and, in that role, upheld the welfare, pride and economic upliftment of her community.  She led the establishment of the Bagobo-Tagabawa Arts and Crafts Center, funded under the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Master’s Creation Program, and thus provided sustainable livelihood and instilled a sense of pride for her people. The beautiful, intricate, and exceptional beading of the Bagobo-Tagabawa women is an artistic tradition that would have faded in history had not Bae Arlyne laboured to promote and elevate it to the contemporary culture and arts scene. Bae Arlyne has similarly upheld the position of women in governance and politics as the Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative (IPMR) and barangay (village) councilor in Lubogan.

Bae Arlyne was the creative drive behind some of the most astounding beadworks made by the Bagobo-Tagabawa beaders, including the Umpak ka Bayi (traditional beaded blouse) and headpiece worn as national costume by Ms. Universe Philippines candidate Alaiza Milano, the Tangkulo featured at the 2018 International Beads Conference in Borneo and the stunning beaded garments and accessories now displayed at the Bagobo House.  Bae Arlyne’s efforts had been duly recognized as the women beaders of Lubongan received funding for their works from various organizations, including the Philippine Women’s University – Artisanal Heritage Studies and Creative Enterprise Center (AHSCES), Arte Fino, Go Negosyo and Great Women Project.

As an educator of living traditions, Bae Arlyne, shares the legacy of her mother and grandmother to anyone interested to learn the masterful art of beadwork. She spends significant time to teach her followers the skill of beading that is unique to Bagobo-Tagabawa. The stories she imparts during her teaching sessions are documentary gems that are testament to the glory and pride of her tribe.

On several occasions and events, the master artisan in Bae Arlyne stood out as world class as it is innovative. The works she and the women beaders of Bagobo-Tagabawa have been prominently featured at the Manila FAME and Philippine Business Conference in 2017, at Yuchengco Museum special exhibition of Mindanao Tapestry and the Kabilin Mindanao Folk Arts Museum.

Bae Arlyne is a recipient of the BRAVO Empowered Women Awards program which honours change makers, achievers, and advocates of social change.
