Artex

Extending, Exchanging, Experimenting –  ArtEx is a venue for artists and cultural workers to explore and expand their art-based approaches. As the first Southern Mindanao Art Laboratory, ArtEx has expanded the art practice beyond the usual art institutions to reach different communities in the country. Since 2019, ArtEx has launched collaborations with various community-based and indigenous artisans and artists, including the traditional t’nalak weavers and brass casters of South Cotabato. The first ArtEx project had eight ArtEx fellows holding dialogues with each other, exchanging ideas on how to co-create and improve the art practice and promoting the spirit of collaboration among art practitioners. Under this fellowship, knowledge-sharing and upscaling of skills were given emphasis. The Lang Dulay Weaving Center and Sesotunawa were among the first partners of ArtEx with which the eight artist fellows connected and worked with in implementing art production. Today, ArtEx continues to engage with communities to make art and art-making a progenitor of community development. It facilitates the immersion of ArtEx fellows in communities to create a bridge for exchange and experimentation, where both the community and the artists actively participate in making the art practice a productive endeavor. ArtEx is continuously exploring and aiming for long-term collaborations with communities.
